The origin is not entirely clear. Could be from lit. sãras „apie nerimtą, padykusį žmogų“ (LKŽK), cf. still lit. šãras „pašaras“ (ibid.) and Z. Zinkevičius, 1977, p. 203. But cf. Brus Шаpаў, Шаpoў ¹, Шаpы ², Polish. Szary (SSNO V 277), Szara ³, German. Schaar(e), Schar, Scharr, Scharre, Schär ⁴.♦ Also cf. lit. island „skuba, šora“ (LKŽe).
