Šepaitis

Cf. lit. Šepelis, Šepi̇̀kas, Šepokas, Šẽputa, Šepùtis (see), Szepatis ¹. The origin is not entirely clear. In theory, the pvd of the majority of Žemaitsi. šep- could be from šip- (see Ši̇̀pas). Z. Zinkevičius ² of these surn. connects the root with lit. ap-šẽp-ęs. Cf. still lit. šèpti, šemp̃pa, šẽpo „negražiai, netvarkingai augti plaukams, barzdai; prastai, skurdžiai augti“ (LKŽK) or similar.
