Abaranas

Perhaps from Ãbaronas (see), cf. Latin Abarons (RTAS 49). The origin is unclear. Cf. Russian Oбopа ¹, bRuss. Aбopа, Aбаpэвiч ², Oбopинъ ³, Янъ Aбopoвичъ ⁴, Polish. Oborka ⁵ and German. Now ⁶. However, the connection with the German But because of Lieut. pers.n. with abar- geography (mostly in eastern Lithuania) would be less convincing. On the other hand, Ãbaran (or Ãbaron) and some other lit. surnames with abar-, especially Abãris, Abãrius, Ãbaronas (see), may not be borrowed, formed from lit. appellative ãbara „vėpla, žioplys“ Tvr, cf. ãbar-oti „nevykusiai ką daryti; eiti lyg abarai“ (LKŽ I 3).
