Aleliūnas

ALELIŪ́NAS

Etymology

Perhaps the suffix -ūnas is derived from the verb aleliúoti, alelióti „rėkauti, šūkauti; loti, skalyti“, cf. alė́tirėkauti, lalėti“ (LKŽ I 96). Such a connection would be opposed to the accusative with a strong beginning of the suffix, because nomina agentis of this type are usually stressed with a strong ending: keikū̃nas, klajū̃nas, lakstū̃nas, rijū̃nas, etc. ¹. But perhaps the accusative of the surname suffix is generalized according to other patronymic derivatives of the suffix -ū́nas, which have a strong initial accusative. See also Hallelujah.
