ALŠVANGAS
Etymology
Cf. Latin surn. Alšvangs (RTAS 54), lieutenant. Al̃ž-flat < *Alš-flat, El̃z-flat < *Els-fLatv. The origin of the first cold is unclear. According to K. Būgas ¹, alš- cannot be connected with alks-: al̃ksnis. Sandas -vangas is of the same origin as OPr. wangus „lydimas; trakas“, lit. vanga „dirva“ ².
