Bagužas

This surn. the interpretation of the origin depends on the suffixes -ušis, -ušis, etc. of relationship with the suffixes -uzas, -uzis. For example, next to surn. Bagušas, Bagušáuskas, Bagušẽvičius, Bagùšis, Bòguša, Bògušas, Bogušẽvičius, Bògušis, Bogùšis, etc. we have surn. Bãgužas, Bagužẽvičius, Bãgužis, Bagùžis, Bògužas, Bogužáuskas. Are these surn. suffixes with -uš- and with -zaž- are of completely different origins, or is that difference a later one that arose for other reasons? Undoubtedly, it is difficult to answer this question due to the lack of specific research. However, it is not impossible that suffixes with -za- in this case may be later reworkings from suffixes with -uš- ¹. At the same time, we want to emphasize that there are more examples whose „variantai“ with -zaž- can be considered as originating from older genders with -uš-. These are primarily Álbužis (Krtn, Kn), Álbužis (Dr), Albùžis (Plng), Albužis (Šl), which are connected with surn. Albušáitis ². Cf. V. Kalvaitis' ³ inscription with š: Albuszis. There is a definite connection between surn. Babùžis (Brt) and Bobùšis (Brt, Vlkv), because people surn. Babùšis also says Bobùšis. Perhaps such a connection could be suspected between surn. Antùšas (Lk) and Ántužis ⁴, Bertušys (Klp) and Bertùžis (Krtn), Gáudušas, Gaũdušas (Klm, Krž, Vg) and Gáudužas (Krp) and so on. The subsequent transition of some surname suffixes with -za- to suffixes with -zaž- could also be supported by the assimilation action of harsh consonants: Bògušas > Bògužas: š becomes harsh due to the influence of harsh g.
