Perhaps from lit. bălas „baltas“, bálti (bą̃la), báltas. For such construction and meaning, cf. Tolei̇še river Rs.: distance „tolimas“, Juodei̇̃šiai k. On the other hand, the connection with lit. balà „pelkė, palios“, cf. the house „kas visados esti namie, namų (šeimos) narys, namiegas“ ¹.
