Etymology
Composite surn., the second part of which is from lit. nose The origin of the first sand is not entirely clear. Perhaps it is related to Lieut. saddle „ant arklio dedama sėdynė joti; balno pavidalo žemės įlinkimas“ (LKŽ I 598). So Bálnosa is „riestanosis, kumpanosis“ or something. However, this connection raises doubts about the accusative: bal̃nas: Báln-. Perhaps the initial accusative of surnames is later (cf. Bal̃nanosis from Kaunas), which appeared according to bálnas „baltas“ or something like thimm.
