Bauža

Most of our surn. with the root bauz- are probably nicknames. These are primarily Baužỹs, Baũžas, Baužà (see). They are related to Lieut. line „su plika galva, kakta; tuščias, plikas“, line, line „kas nukirptas plikai“. In addition, cf. also: baužà „žioplys, vėpla“, baũžas „baidyklė, baubas, šmėkla; didelis, paaugęs piemuo; išdykėlis“, baũžė „baidyklė“, baũžis „baidyklė, baubas“, báužti „eiti smagiai, drožti“ (LKŽ I 697-699). See also J. Otrębski, 1961, p. 42. In one other case, perhaps it can be assumed that our surn. with bauž- (e.g. Báuža) was also formed in another way - may be an irregular reworking from the Polish. Bohusz or similar.
