Etymology
One might suspect that the stem berštaut- is compound: berš(t)- and taut-. However, more Baltic pers.n. compounds with the stem berš(t)- seem to be unknown. Therefore, most likely the stem berštaut- is a reworking (or a kind of lime) from German. Berchtold or similar. ¹.
