The origin is unclear. Connection with Bi̇̀zas (see), etc. would be hard to explain phonetically. Perhaps Bižỹs is a nickname for surn. - the ending -ys is derived from bi̇̀žė „utėlė, bužė“ (LKŽ I 871). For semantics see Bužỹs.
