Birgela
BIRGELÀ
Etymology
The origin is unclear. Several interpretations are possible. Cf. lit. bir̃gelas, bir̃gilas „birgalas, nenusisekęs prastas naminis alus ar šiaip koks prastas gėrimas; bizalas; prasta sriuba“ ¹, bir̃gelis „bet koks prastas gėrimas“ ². Can sometimes be folded from *Birgaila, cf. Jageło < Jogáila or distorted from *Birgėla ³. Also cf. German Bürgel, Birgle, Bergel: Burg ⁴. See also Bergel.
