Birzgalis

Cf. Latin Birzgalis ¹, Birzgals ², Birzgales k., Bir̃zgalis k., Bir̃zgaļi k., Bi̇̀rzgals k. ³. The origin of all is unclear. Possibly compound words, the first syllable of which is birz-, connected with Limm. bir̃zs „beržtva, beržynas“, and the second - with gals ⁴. However, cf. lit. bir̃zgalas „kas birzgia, į akis lenda“ (LKŽ I 848), cf. lit. bir̃gzti „bimbti, zirzti, birbti; bambėti, murmėti and others“ ⁵.
