Etymology
The origin can be various. In one case it is connected with Slavism bóbelis, bòbelis ¹ „trobelninkas, kampininkas, mažažemis“ (LKŽ I 961) - see Babi̇̀lius, another - with bóba. In addition, the entire surn. can sometimes be borrowed, cf. German Bobel, Bobell(e) ², Polish. Bobel ³. Also cf. Latin Bãbele k., Bãbelis k., Bàbeļi k. ⁴, lit. Babel (see).
