Buberas

BÙBERAS

Etymology

Cf. Latin Buberis (LAG 291), Bubiers ¹, Buberis k., Bubber k. ². These Latv. place names most likely do not come from Latv. bubere „toks serbentas ³“ (LVV I 343), as given in the dictionary of Latvian place names ⁴, because the same Latv. the appellative appears to be from the German Bocksbeere (LVV I 343), but from the corresponding Limm. surnames. Lieut. and Latv. surn. also apparently Germanisms, cf. German Bubert, Bubbert, Bober: *Bodebert ⁵.
