Bublys
BUBLỸS
Etymology
Unclear relationship with Būblỹs (see), cf. Latin Bubļi k. ¹, and Bũbļi k. ². Pvt. Bublỹs variants ³ with long ū would indicate a connection between surn. Bublỹs and Būblỹs. The origin of the latter is clear - it is the nickname surn. from lit. state „toks paukštis, baublys“ (LKŽ I 1112), cf. Baublỹs (see). Is Bublỹs an apophonic surn. Búblỹs variant, not entirely clear, although such a change of vowels is possible, cf. to bubble „būbti (apie būblį)“ (LKŽ I 1112). In addition, sometimes the short vowel u may have appeared due to the fault of the scribes.
