Budzys
BUDZỸS
Etymology
Cf. Latin Budze (LAG 254), Budzis ¹, Budži k., Budžus k. The latter Latv. place names are associated with Latv. budzis „senas, suvargęs, be jėgų žmogus; kas apskritai nereikalingas, nenaudingas and others“ ². So one could suspect that our surn. Bùdzis, Budzỹs, Bùdzius from northern Žemaicai are also related to Latv. budzis and therefore should be considered Latvian (Curonian?). Pvt. Budzys from Marijampolė remains unclear. Maybe it's a result of migration?
