Buojus

Cf. Latin Boja ¹, lit. Buõjis pv., b., vs. Pšl, Buõjaragis village. ibid., Buõjai b. Sml., Buojẽlis pv. Pkr. The origin is unclear. It could be derived from lit. buoy „bala, klampynė“ (LKŽ I 1168): Men, hurry to pull the horse from the buoy Sml. The grass, which has been cut by the boom, must be carried to the edge by oneself. But the appellative buojis is used in a very small area - only where there are place names Buõjis, Buojẽlis, Buõjis. Therefore, one can suspect that the word buoy in the quoted sentences is not a general word, but a place name. Hence, Latv. vv. Buõjas k., Buõju-kalnarāji k., connection of Buõj-upe with lit. buoy ² does not prove anything. By the way, Latv. Buõjāts k. not simply connected with lit. buoy, and derived from Latv. surn. Bojāts (RTAS 81).
