Burgis

BÙRGIS

Etymology

Cf. Latin Burga (LAG 79), Burģis ¹, Bur̃ga k., Bur̃ģi k. ². The latter name of the village is associated with Latv. burģis „burtininkas, raganius“ (ibid.). So maybe lit. surn. Bùrgis is a lettism. Cf. still lit. drill „murmėti“ etc. (LKŽ I 1183). Despite the relatively reliable Baltic of this surn. etymology, however, it is impossible to overlook the particularly abundant German. pers.n. group with burg-: Burg, Burgy, Burgs, Burgis, Bürgel, etc. ³.
