According to V. Urbutis, such a claim is wrong. In his opinion, BRuss. surn. (especially older) chandeliers with brass. буpы „rudas, rusvas“, cf. Pудак: pуды and so on. ⁵. Cf. still bend Burzak, Bury: Polish. bury „rudas, rusvas“ ⁶. Anyway, apparently not all lit. surn. Burõkas has the same origin: sometimes the whole surname can be borrowed, sometimes when referring to the very last 17th and even 18th centuries. formed nicknames, however, can also be from the loan word burõkas. The meaning of the latter appellation is not so important here, especially if we agree that it is Polish. the meaning of burak „runkelis, burokas“ can be „laipsniškos semantinės raidos padarinys“ ⁷ from burak „agurklė“. That Lieut. surnames can be derived from borrowed names of plants, as shown, for example, by Agur̃kas, whose „augaline“ origin is difficult to doubt. Second, what makes you suspect surn. Burõkas in one case may be of „augalinės“ origin, there are other pvds of ours, which with surn. Burõka forms a certain group. These are primarily Bùrac and Bùrag. Common word bRuss., Russ. буpак, Polish. beetroot „runkelis, burokas“ etc. associated with Russ. бopач, Serbian-Croatian бòpâч, check. borák, borág (dial. burak), Polish. borak, borag, burak and is derived from vit. Latin borāgo „agurklė, Borago officinalis“ ⁸. Hence, our surn. Bùračas and Bùrag (see) can be reflexes of the word burak variants borač, borag. Neither from writings nor from living speech. common words *buračas, *buragas are not recorded, so most probably surn. Bùračas, Bùrag are borrowed. Hence, surnames in Slavic languages ​​that can be associated with the name of the plant burak ⁹ are not completely impossible. Of course, not necessarily all sl. surnames *Burak are related to this word - some of them can be composed as indicated by V. Urbutis. The relationship with lit. surn. Bùrakas (see) is unclear, but it is certain (because of the vowel a after r and because of the place of stress) that surn. Bùrak could not regularly form lit. in the language - apparently, it is all borrowed (from the Slavs or from the Latvians). Irregularities and cases of distortion cannot be overlooked and are possible.
