Domantas

Compound surname. Cf. lit. Dó-montas, Dó-vainis, Da-vai̇̃nis, Do-vi̇̀las, Do-vil̃čius, Dó-viltis, Do-vintas (see). Sando's origin is not entirely clear. K. Būga considers the name of chronicles Дoмантъи to be derived from Дoвмoнтъ, Дoвмантъ ¹. However, cf. lit. Domañčiai k. Pakruojo district, Domantai̇̃ village. Jurbarkas and Šiauliai districts, Dómantiškiai village. Ukmergė district, Dómantonys village. Alytus district, Dómantas up. (< pers.n. Dómantas). So, it seems that there would be grounds for distinguishing an independent set of compound personal nouns do-. It is associated with lit. dotas, dovis „davimas“ ². See also Z.
