Gailius

GAĨLIUS

Etymology

Cf. lit. Gáila (see). The origin is not entirely clear. Pvt. Gai̇̃lius is clearly Semitic (with one other exception). Bearing in mind the special Latv. the popularity of the surname Gailis and its possible diffusion to Lithuania (see Gáilis), one should not lose sight of the fact that the lit. Gai̇̃lius can sometimes be from Gai̇̃lis, Gáilis (see). However, in most cases, lit. Gai̇̃lius can be derived from lit. to pity (for semantics see Gailiùšis), cf. pity „gailestis, pasigailėjimas“ (LKŽ III 23), pity „atgaila“ ¹, pity, pity „aštrus, glitus; aitrus, kartus; šaltas; piktas, rūstus; gailestingas; pasigailėjimo vertas, griaudus, skurdus, verksmingas; liūdnas and others“ ².
