Etymology
Aggregate surn. For gir- cf. Gi̇̀r-gantas, Gi̇̀r-i-jõtas, Gi̇̀r-jotas, Gi̇̀r-kontas, Gir̃-kontas, Gi̇̀r-tautas, Gi̇̀r-vainis, Gi̇̀r-žadas, Gir-žãdas (see). in sande, the root gir- seems to be almost non-existent. The root girt- is more common: Daũ-drunk, Skaũs-drunk, Vai̇̃z-drunk, Vi̇̀s-drunk, Vi̇̀z-drunk (see). However, these surn. the second word girt- may be a later rework from gird-. The root gir- (girt-) is associated with lit. to know ¹. For cant- see Kántautas.
