Guobys

First of all, it is not clear whether all these surnames are etymologically related. Their connection would be possible if we derived them all from lit. guõbti „gaubtis; grobti, griebti; krūvon traukti and others“ (LKŽ III 736), góbti „gaubti; siausti, supti; grobti, imti, glemžti; glaustis and others“ ¹, gobùs „gobšus, godus“ ², gabùs „kuris sugeba ką padaryti; gobus, godus, gabšus; vikrus“, cf. gabšùs „godus“, gabštùs „nagingas; gobus, godus“ ³. But, it is possible that some of these surnames have a different origin. Let's say, eg. Gúoba may be derived simply from the tree name gúoba (Ulmus), cf. Latin Goba ⁴, Gobiņš ⁵: Latv. elm „guoba“ (LVV I 688).
