Juška

JUŠKÀ

Etymology

Cf. polish Juszka ¹, Juszka, Juszko (SSNO II 510), bRuss. Юшка, Юшкo: Eвфимий ², Russian. Юшка: Eфим ³. It seems unjustified is the attempt in Poland. Juszka, etc. to derive without reservations from the appellative in Lenk. juszka „žvėries kraujas“ ⁴. On the other hand, the stem jušk-, like juš- (see Jùšas), could also be from Justiǹno, cf. vend. Juschke: Justus ⁵; Juõzapo, cf. polish Juszkiewicz, Juszczak, Juszczyk, derived from Polish. Józef ⁶; George, cf. Brus Юшка: Геopгий, Юpий ⁷, Russ. Юшкo: Юpий ⁸. The connection with Juõzap and especially with Jùrgis seems perhaps the most reliable.
