Etymology
It is not entirely clear when from lit. king „valdovo, monarcho titulas kai kuriuose kraštuose“ (LKŽ V 261), when from the borrowed pers.n. Kãrolius or the like, when - the whole surn. is borrowed, cf. polish Karol ¹, bRuss. Кopoль, Russian. Кopoль ². However, most of the time, apparently, it is avd turned into a surname. Kãrolius and its variants ³.
