Kervys

The origin of surnames with kerv- is unclear, mainly due to the fact that next to them, often from almost the same places, we have surnames with axe-: Kirvà, Kirváitis, Kirvẽlis, Kirvickis, Kirvinskis (see). So, in many cases, surnames with the roots kerv- and kirv- can be intertwined, and quite often, especially from the area of ​​Žemaitian dialects, where the vowel i is extended (pronounced ẹ), it can be genetically the same surname, only written differently. Anyway, in cases where surnames with kerv- are authentic, they can be associated with lit. ker̃vas „keverziškas, nerangus“, ker̃vinti „pamažu, nevikriai eiti; kėblinti“, kervóti „eiti pamažu, svyruojant į šalis“ (LKŽ V 633).
