Klova
KLÓVA
Etymology
Cf. lit. Klóvas (see). Further connected with Latv. Klūjaa (LAG 178), Klāva ¹, Kļava ², Klāvs ³, Kļavs ⁴. The origin of Latvian surnames is not entirely clear, especially due to kļav-: klūų-. On the one hand, we could compare it with Latv. maple, maple „klevas“ (LVV II 239). A particularly common Latvian surname is Kļaviņš, which is related to Limm. maple, maple is unmistakable. But Lithuanian surnames with klov- can only logically correspond to Latvian personal names with klāv-. Such Latvian personal names are quite common. Especially popular is Latv. Klāvs - from Nicolaus ⁵. Therefore, Lithuanian surnames with klov can even more often be associated with Klāvs.
