Cf. Cone (see). Perhaps, though it is not entirely clear, with a shortened u from Kūgỹs - cf. Cone. But cf. Latin Kuga (LAG 30), Kug̓is ¹, Kug̓ītis (ibid. 109). A possible connection with Lieut. kugénti „drebėti nuo šalčio; juoktis, krizenti“ (LKŽ VI 774) - see Z. Zinkevičius, 1977, p. 159.
