It is not entirely clear whether from Slavism Ảvas „liūtas“ (LKŽ VI 387), or, which is perhaps even more reliable, from the baptismal name Lẽvas, cf. polish Lew (SSNO III 252), BRuss., Rus. Лев ¹.
