Makaras

Cf. Mãkari (see). This is one of the most obvious cases when two different personal names can coincide in the same surname (with variants). On the one hand, Lieut. Mãkar could be a nickname derived from lit. mãkaras „nerimtas žmogus, makalis, pliuškis; kas nuolat juda, muistosi, visur painiojasi“ (LKŽ VII 771), mãkaris „idem“ ¹, on the other hand, especially Makãras (due to the place of emphasis) and Mãkaris (due to the ending) - from the baptismal name Makãrijus, cf. polish Makary, BRuss., Rus. Макаpий. It is impossible to distinguish when a surname is a nickname and when it comes from another personal name. However, especially considering the large number of surnames, there is reason to guess that most of them will probably be of personal origin.
