Mankus

Cf. Mankas, Mankis (see). The origin is not entirely clear. Sometimes it is possible to shorten it from the compound personal name Man-kantas ¹. Not infrequently, there could also be nicknames derived from lit. mankus „mąslus“ (LKŽ VII 843) or mánkyti „lamdyti, lankstyti; mankštinti, lavinti; sprausti; klampoti“ ². However, it is probably more often associated with Polish. Manko, Mańko, Manek, Maniek, which, among others, may also come from Matyjasz (SSNO III 390), German. Mank ³, bRuss. Манькo: Мануил ⁴.
