Melėnas
MELĖ́NAS
Etymology
Cf. Melènis, Melẽnius (see). First of all, apparently, it is connected with Limm. Melens ¹, Mellens ², further - with Limm. mȩl̃ns „juodas“ (LVV II 598), cf. Latin mel̃lene „tamsaus gymio moteris, brunetė“ ³, lit. blue „mėlynas“ (LKŽ VII 1029). See also Z. Zinkevičius, 1977, p. 172. However, sometimes there may be certain reworkings from the baptismal name Emilijõnas, cf. Brus Меллян: Eмельян ⁴. In addition, the fact that the root mel- can sometimes be from miel-, cf. Sweetie.
