Cf. Metric (see). The origin is unclear. There may be nicknames, connected with lit. measure „ketinti, manyti“, measure „daryti išvadą, spėti“, measure „kabinėtis, kibintis“ or so on. (LKŽ VIII 123). However, a connection with Mi̇̀trikas is also possible (see).
