Cf. Mýš-tautas, Mýš-tovtas (see). Perhaps compound surn. For the first word mish-, mish- cf. still in Latv. Mištovts (LAG 538), Lieut. Mishtautai̇̃ k. Kėdainiai and Zarasai district, Mištautonys village. Šalčininkai district, Миштoвтoвичи village. former Veliuona vls. ¹. K. Būga presents surn. Mýž-people from Kvėdarna аpуl., (ibid.). So the first sound remains completely unclear - it's hard to even say whether it was miš- (myš-) or miž-. For the nation - see Proliferative.
