Musteikis
MUSTEĨKIS
Etymology
Cf. Musteikà (see). The origin is unclear. Connection with Lieut. ap-mùsti „netekti sąmonės, apsvaigti“ (LKŽ VIII 443) is doubtful because of the geography of this word (known perhaps only from Perloja). For the same reason surn. Mustei̇̃kis or something. could hardly be derived from the Sami word mùsti „tirštėti verdant, suvirti į košę“, su-mùsti „sutirštėti verdant, smarkiai suvirti; patižti; susidrumsti; labai sušilti, sukaisti“ (ibid.). Therefore, it seems that these surn. primarily related to Limm. surnamed Muste (LAG 125), Mustis ¹, Musts (RTAS 244). Latvian surnames will probably come from Limm. Finno-Ugric mustis „tamsus, tamsaus gymio žmogus“ (< Estonian must resp. Lyvian mustā „juodas“, Estonian muśt „juodas šuo“) (LVV II 672).
