Perhaps the most common surnames (some of which later changed in various ways) with the Slavic suffix -sk- are derived from the name of a city in the Belarusian SSR, bRuss. Навагpудак, Russian. Нoвoгpудoк (lit. Naugardùkas), or from the RTFSR city name in Russian. Нoвгopoд (lit. Naũgardas). True, in one other case, it is not impossible that these are substitutional ¹ derivatives from Navrùckas (see) or similar.
