Pakėnas

PAKĖ́NAS

Etymology

Cf. Paken and perhaps Pakẽnis, Pakiẽnis (see). The root pak- is probably connected with some sl. in the common language abbreviation of the baptismal name Pach. Some researchers associate it with the baptismal name Póvilas, cf. Russian Паха: Павел ¹, Polish. Pach: Paweł ². See dar A. Vanagas, 1980, p. 71. There are opinions that Pach is connected with the baptismal name Pẽtras, cf. polish Pach: Piotr (SSNO IV 172), Pach: Piotr ³, and even Pachòmijus, cf. Bulgarian Пахo: Пахoмий ⁴. So surn. Pakënas could be suffixed with -ēnas made from „sulietuvinto“ this short version.
