Salys
SALỸS
Etymology
Cf. Sala (see). It is probably an abbreviation of the baptismal name Solomon, cf. Salỹs: Saliãmonas ¹, bulg. Coлo: Coлoмoн ², cf. also Z. Zinkevičius, 1977, p. 192. Cf. still German Saal, Sahle ³, bRuss. Cала, Cалаў, Cалo ⁴, Polish. Island (SSNO V 5), Sało ⁵. ♦ On the other hand, it cannot be ruled out that it may be a veldyn of the Baltic languages ⁶, because sal- root personal names are fixed in the Prussian language, cf. pers.n. Sale, Salicke, Saluke ⁷.
