Etymology

Cf. Serei̇̃kis (see) and Serãvičius, Serẽvičius, Serẽckis (see). The origin of the root is not entirely clear. Perhaps it can be associated with lit. in Slavism siẽras „pilkas“ (LKŽ XII 529), cf. still Russian Serov ¹, bRuss. Cеpы, Cяpoў, Cяpoўскi, Russian, Ukrainian Cеpoй ² and so on. Although in many cases it could be phonetic, graphic or other. variants of the roots sir- (see Sirei̇̃kis) or šer-, šir- ³.
