Slepikas

Pvt. the origin is not entirely clear. We could connect the root spel- with lit. hide „dėti, laikyti ką kur, kad kiti nerastų, nepamatytų; laikyti paslaptyje, nesakyti, neskelbti and others“ (LKŽ XII 1216) or similar, cf. still lit. ṛši̇̀kas „slėpėjas; kas pabėgęs slapstosi, pabėgėlis“ ¹. But it can also be of Slavic origin, cf. Brus Cлепаў, Cлепoй, Cляпый, Cлепы, Russian, Ukrainian Cлепoй ² and so on.
