Sodys

SODỸS

Etymology

Cf. Sadys, Sodis (see). Pvt. the origin is not clear, they may not be of the same origin. Our surn. with sad- could be dialectal or graphic surn. with sod- options. Some of them can be borrowed from Slavic languages and are of appellative origin. However, another origin is also possible, cf. Brus Cад, Cадзiк: Cадoк ¹, Russian. Cадя: Cадoк ². Many of our surn. with sod- we could connect with lit. sodi̇̀nti „augalą, daigą kišti, terpti į žemę, kad augtų; apsodinti; visą plotą prisodinti and others“ (LKŽ XIII 277-278), sõdas „žemės plotas, kuriame auga vaismedžiai and vaiskrūmiai“ ³ or similar. But sod- (especially due to the geography of these examples) can also come from suod- (see Suodis).
