Cf. Stable (see). The origin is not entirely clear, perhaps from lit. sudden „drąsus, stiprus, narsus; pernelyg išaugęs, išstypęs“ (LKŽ XIII 627). But lending is also possible, cf. German Steibl, Steible, Steybel, Stäubli, Stäubel, Stäubte ¹.
