STRÕPUS
Etymology
The origin is unclear. Could be from lit. diligent „rūpestingai, kruopščiai dirbantis, uolus; greitas, vikrus; gudrus, klastingas; godus“ (LKŽ XIII 995). But cf. still German Strop(p) ¹, Stropp ². In addition, surn. strop- could sometimes also be from strup-, see Strùp.
