Cf. Tennis (see), Latv. Tenne ¹, Tenis ². Pvt. the origin is not entirely clear. Cf. lit. tenéti „tirštėti, stingti“ (DLKŽ), although there- could also be from tin-, then cf. lit. ti̇̀nti „nenormaliai plėstis, burkti“, ti̇̀nti „plakti dalgį; mušti, daužyti“ (ibid.).
