Tulys
TULỸS
Etymology
Cf. Tula, Thule, Tuli (see). The origin of the root tul- is not clear. Perhaps first cf. lit. tū́las „dažnas, ne vienas, daug kas“ (DLKŽ), _tūlė_̃ „daugybė, būrys, pulkas“ ¹ and so on. Cf. also Tulmiǹnas (see). But the possibility of another origin cannot be overlooked. Cf. perhaps our surn. with tol- (see Tólis) and bRuss. Tулей, Ukrainian Tулей ², Polish. Tułaj, Tułek (SSNO V 488), Russian. Tулаев, Tуликoв, Tулин, Tулoвский (CAМC IV 431-432), German. Thule, Thull, Thüle ³.
