Etymology
Compound surname from *Van-butas. Cf. still lit. surn. Vem̃-flat < *Ven-(*Van-?)flat, Vam-flat < *Van-flat (see). For the first sand van- cf. lit. Voñ-zadas < *Van-zadas (see), OPr. Wan-alge ¹. It is believed that the Prussian personal names Ey-wan, Per-wan have the second sound van- ². The origin of the root is unclear. It is possible to associate it with lit. vanóti „mušti, plakti“ (DLKŽ). For but- see Bùtauts.
