Vėlius
VĖ̃LIUS
Etymology
Cf. Vela, Velãvičius, Vëlãvičius, Vëlỹs, Veliùlis, Velius, Veliùšis, Velùtis, Vëlùtis (see). The origin is not entirely clear. However, it is most likely connected not with the noun _vėlė_̃, but with the adjective late. This connection is primarily made possible by construction, because derivatives with -ulis, -ušis, -utis are especially often made from adjectives: Mažiùlis: măžas, Baltùšis: báltas, Gaižùtis: gaižùs. Vëlỹbis and Vëlỹvis also show that surnames with the semantics of lateness are possible (see).
