Etymology
Connection with Lieut. čiūpalẽlis „kurs čiupinėjasi and vis ant vietos“ (LKŽ II 163) due to the geography of this word (known only from the western Žemaitsi) and phonetics (long ū) also raises doubts. Cf. still bend Czupała ¹.
