Šeržentas

The origin is not entirely clear. Cf. lit. debt series „šeržantas; seržantas“ (LKŽK), bRuss. Cеpжант, Cеpжантаў ¹, Russian. Cеpжант, Cеpжантoв (CAМC IV 108). But there can also be a compound surn., the second stem of which is son-in-law, and the first is of personal origin, cf., for example, Šerỹs (see) or the like. See also Sergeant.
